Video tour of the strange and funny things you can see in the 320 Gigapixel panorama of London.

The record-breaking 320-gigapixel interactive panorama of the capital lets you zoom in on streets and buildings 20 miles away.
Here in my video I will take you on a tour of some of the strange and funny things I have found hidden in it. I'm sure there are lots of funny things to see, this is just a collection to give you an idea.

Its made from 48,640 individual photographs stitched into a single multi-resolution panorama.
It was captured with four Canon EOS 7D cameras with EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM lenses and Extender EF 2x III teleconverters (800mm total). They were mounted on Clauss Rodeon VR Head ST robotic panorama heads and positioned in four locations around the 29th floor platform (177 Meters in the air.)

Each photograph from the Canon EOS 7D camera is 5184 x 3456 pixels (18 megapixels).
The captured photographs took up 3 terabytes of data, They used JPG rather than RAW simply because there would be far too much data to deal with !


It took the stitching software around 200 hours of render time. The computer that was used to do the stitching was a Fujitsu Celsius R920 workstation with 256GB of RAM and 16 cores at 3.1GHz !

You simply move the viewpoint around with your mouse. Use the mousewheel to zoom in and out.
You can also use the keys on the keyboard (except when in fullscreen mode)
A/Z zoom in and out
Cursor keys for moving.

The man in the "One Show" T-shirt is JJ, a presenter from the BBC TV series The One show. You can see him near Buzby and also on the top of St Pauls Cathedral.

How did I record this video tour?
I reduced my screen resolution down from 1920x1080 to 1280x720
I used Google Chrome to view the panorama and put it into fullscreen mode.
I used camtasia studio 8 to record the fullscreen at 1280x720 pixels.

360 degree tour Darley Park for the 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Evening Celebration and Darley Park Concert.

I have been working for several weeks on a complete virtual tour of Darley Park in preperation for the 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Evening Celebration and Darley Park Concert which are both taking place in this park.
This will allow people around the world to look around the park in great detail using my full spherical 360° x 180° panoramas taken at various places. Mostly in May this year but I have also included some from years past that have never been seen before.

I have just been to Darley Park (Wednesday 27th June 2012) and taken a new panorama on the slope in front of the stage which is currently being erected ready for Friday and Saturday.

This is a very large panorama and you should only attempt to view it if you have at least a 10Mb broadband connection otherwise it will take too long to load in.

In my panorama you can see the stage taking shape next to the Derwent, as you can see its going to be quite a big stage and the location withing Darley Park should allow everyone to get a good view of the events.

Once loaded in you can have a look around using the mouse or the icons at the bottom. Click the fullscreen icon to make the viewer fill your screen (just like the YouTube player).

Also I retook a panorama in front of the new Terrace Cafe area that is almost ready to reopen after months of redevelopment.

The Olympic Torch arrives in Derby on Friday June 29th 2012 at 6:25pm at Markeaton roundabout.
When the torch reaches the Olympic Torch Celebrations stage in Darley Park Double world Superbike champion James Toseland will light the Olympic cauldron.
The celebration, being broadcast live on BBC1, will include performances from urban pop star Loick Essien and Britain's Got Talent 2010 runners-up Twist and Pulse.

If you miss the torch on Friday then you still have a chance to see it early on Saturday. It will leave Derby Market Place at 6:41am
The very last chance you have to see it in Derby is at Royal Derby Hospital at 7:17am on 30th June 2012. It will leave there on its way to Burton on Trent.

My latest World Wide Panorama theme entry accepted - The Derby Canal at Swarkestone.

The current themed event has just gone live on the World Wide Panorama website and the theme for this event was "Limits" so for my entry I created a 360x180 degree VR photograph from the top of the restored accomodation bridge of the former Derby Canal at Swarkestone.

World Wide Panorama - Best of 2010 - Dovedale Stepping Stones.

Regular visitors to my blog may be familiar with my 360x180 degree photography and my submissions on the World Wide Panorama website. The last event closed in January and the theme for this event was "best of 2010" so for my entry I submitted a panorama I took in the middle of Dovedale Stepping Stones.

360 degree Panorama of Burton Road, Warwick Avenue Crossroads at night.

The current themed event has just closed on the World Wide Panorama website and the theme for this event was "Crossroads" so for my entry I created a 360x180 degree VR photograph at the major crossroads in Derby where Warwick Avenue meets Burton Road and Manor Road. If you live in Derby you will know only too well that this juntion has rather a lot of traffic using it so my plan was to take my panorama in the middle of the night to show a different view of it. I'm sure you will agree I've certainly captured it at peace.!

Greyhound Pub, Friar Gate - A 360x180 degree VR photograph outside.

Following on from yesterdays post on the Greyhound pub reopening I thought I would make a 360x180 degree virtual Reality photograph so you can see what it looks like and its position on Friar Gate.

I have created an interactive 360 degree high resolution photograph in front of this pub so you can see exactly where it is located on Friargate and what it looks like, click the link and then use the mouse to look around and zoom in :

It is like google streetview image, its an interactive 360 degree photograph that you control using the mouse.
To move the view around simply click with the mouse and drag the viewpoint to where you want to look. You can look in all directions including up and down. As well as the mouse, you can use the control buttons at the bottom of the viewer or even the keyboard cursor keys and +/- keys to zoom in/out.

I photographed this at 06:52 on 21st May 2010, the day after it reopened.

World Wide Panorama - Derby Cathedral Quarter Wheel

Happy New Year and welcome to 2010.
My first blog entry of the year is about my latest entry on the World Wide Panorama website which has just gone live today. My entry for this event is of the Derby Cathedral Quarter Wheel in Derby Market Place.
I have contributed 18 360 degree panoramic photographs over the years.

In case you have never heard of The World Wide Panorama:

The World Wide Panorama began in March 2004 and has become an ongoing series of events. Photography takes place on the solstices (longest and shortest days of the year) and equinoxes (day and night of equal length). There is also a "best of" each year.

A VR panorama (VR for virtual reality) is a specially created computer image that goes all the way around the viewer. It is a revolutionary way to document a particular place and time – the next best thing to being there.
VR panoramas are interactive - Use the mouse to rotate the panorama, use Shift and Control to zoom in and out.

If you use Google Earth then you can even download a .kml file which has place markers for every panoramic photograph that has been entered since 2004 :
